Program Overview

Banff Mountain Photography Residency provides photographers with an opportunity to learn how to tell compelling visual narratives through images. Individualized interaction with celebrated photographer Ace Kvale will allow participants to address aspects of the creative process, artistic voice, storytelling, and authenticity in their mountain-themed photographic project.

What does the program offer?

Set in the heart of Banff National Park, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity is a perfect locale for photographers seeking focus and inspiration for their mountain culture based projects. In addition to learning from world-renowned faculty, you'll find the time, space, and facilities for creative thinking and project development. Through faculty presentations, individual critiques, group discussions, peer interaction, and one-on-one consultations, participants will gain new ideas and contemporary insights that can be applied to the development of their work.

Who should apply?

Emerging and seasoned photographers are encouraged to apply. Applicants can be of any age and at any career stage, but must demonstrate exceptional talent, and a strongly focused interest in the mountain theme central to this opportunity.

How to Apply

Cover Letter

In 500 words or less, explain both your background and your long-term goals as a photographer, and explain why you are interested in this program and what you hope to achieve by attending it. 

Resume

A one-page resume or CV describing professional education and achievements, including your most recent projects and your role in them, as well as where your photographs/projects have been shown, and relevant academic, personal and professional experience.

Project Synopsis

Submit a written proposal outlining a mountain-themed photographic project already in progress that you wish to develop and work on during the residency, as well as a selection of images to support the proposal.

Financial Assistance

Be sure to complete the Financial Aid section to be eligible for financial assistance.

Adjudication

Participants are selected by impartial adjudicators on the basis of their submitted material. In addition to artistic merit, consideration will be given to the likelihood that the artist's work will benefit from the program.

All programs, faculty, dates, fees, and offers of financial assistance are subject to change. Program fee is subject to applicable taxes. Non-refundable fees and deposits will be retained upon cancellation. Any other fees are refunded at the discretion of the Banff Centre. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
