This six-month residency will provide time, space, and access to resources for mid-career arts writers to further develop their curatorial and critical writing, conduct research, while engaging with artists-in-residence and programs in Visual + Digital Arts. This residency is suited to arts writers focused on the development of a substantial project resulting in an external publication, presentation, or exhibition with a strong critical arts writing component. Writers are encouraged to meet with artists-in-residence, share their work in the form of readings and presentations, and engage with curatorial and artistic staff at Banff Centre in the development of their external project.
What does the program offer?
Residencies offer structured programs where artists, curators, and other arts professionals come together to create work and discuss pertinent themes in contemporary artistic practice. Scheduled programming is light and designed to allow for ample research and writing, and time to collaborate with the creative community at Banff Centre.
Arts writers will benefit from the insight and mentorship of Banff Centre curatorial staff, visiting curators, faculty, and artists, and through interaction with various Visual + Digital Arts residency programs and other arts programs across campus. This program requires a full six-month commitment and variable dates will not be considered.
If a publishing partner for the proposed project is not yet identified, some assistance or coordination may be provided to secure an external opportunity for final publication of the work created while in residence.
Who should apply?
This program is open to arts writers exploring pertinent topics within visual arts and art criticism.
