Paul O’Neill is a research-oriented curator and leading scholar of curatorial practice, public art and exhibition histories. Recently appointed as the Artistic Director of Checkpoint Helsinki, he has held numerous curatorial and research positions over the last twenty years and taught curatorial practice in the US, Europe and the UK. He received his doctorate in visual culture from Middlesex University, London in 2007.

O’Neill has held posts at institutions around the world including: Director of the Graduate Program at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College (2013-17); visiting international tutor in the de Appel Curatorial Program, Amsterdam (since 2005); international research fellow with The Graduate School of Creative Arts and Media, Dublin (2010-13); and has lectured at Goldsmiths, University of London, and Middlesex University amongst others.  

He is reviews editor for the journal Art and the Public Sphere, co-editor of Afterall’s Exhibition Histories Series, and a regular contributor to Art Monthly.  In addition, O’Neill is on the editorial board for The Journal of Curatorial Studies and FIELD – A Journal of Socially Engaged Art Criticism. Other editorial projects include the curatorial anthology, Curating Subjects (2007); Curating and the Educational Turn (2010); Curating Research (2014); The Curatorial Conundrum…, and How Institutions Think (co-edited with Lucy Steeds and Mick Wilson) published by MIT Press in 2016 and 2017 (forthcoming).  His publications include Locating the Producers: Durational Approaches to Public Art co-edited with Claire Doherty (Amsterdam, Valiz, 2011), and he is the author of the critically acclaimed book The Culture of Curating and the Curating of Culture(s), published by MIT Press in 2012. He is currently working on the co-authored book Durational Aesthetics: Time and Contemporary Art (London, Bloomsbury Press, 2018). O’Neill has curated and co-curated more than sixty projects across the world.  Recent projects include: We are the Center for Curatorial Studies, Hessel Museum of Art, Bard College (2016-17), and We are the (Epi)center, P! Gallery, New York (2016).
