A stimulating and collaborative space to write, complete with an array of international guest artists
The Banff Playwrights Colony was created by playwrights Tom Hendry and George Ryga in the early 1970s. For more than 40 years, The Colony has sustained their founding principles of focusing on playwrights and developing new works away from the pressures of a producing theatre.
Each year The Colony welcomes Canadian playwrights and their collaborators, providing each writer a residency tailored to their specific needs with the goal of nurturing, challenging, and inspiring the next phase of their work. Each Colony features several international writer/dramaturg teams, a small acting company, and partnerships with global organizations.
It was incredibly valuable to have focused time and mindspace at The Colony. Playwriting is a solitary enterprise so it was so rewarding meeting and getting to know other playwrights across Canada. Such a nation building experience…
